Specific learning disabilities and psychopathology problems: Instruments and informants.

tim

Co-occurrence between Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) and psychopathology is a well-known phenomenon; nevertheless its nature is not well understood and it is still under discussion. Few researches aimed to describe the impact of personal and neuropsychological characteristics on the association between reading/writing/math difficulties and psychopathology. Psychometric characteristics of the used instruments and the role of different informants are among the main variables that can interfere with the results. Authors study the use of SDQ (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, 1997) as a tool for detecting emotional and behavioral problems in SLD pre-adolescents. Results show that SDQ results are well correlated with CBCL ones, though they show less psychopathological impairment. Children describe less problems in respect to their parents; sex, age at the first diagnosis and the co-occurrence of reading, writing and math disability play a role in the emergence of different types of emotional and behavioral problems.
