Objective: To study the relation of emotional and behavioral problems to father-child conflict and father-child attachment in children. Methods: Totally 663 children aged 8-15 years were selected. They were assessed with the Conflict Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) to evaluate father-child conflict, which the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) to evaluate father-child attachment, and with the Strength and difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ) to evaluate emotional and behavioral problems separately. Results: The scores of CBQ, IPPA and SDQ total difficulties scores had no significant gender differences (P > 0. 05). The children whose father had junior high school education got higher CBQ scores [(5. 8 + 5. 4) vs. (4. 0 + 4. 2), (3. 9 + 4. 3); P < 0. 05] and lower IPPA scores [(63. 3 + 16. 0) vs. (67. 6 + 12. 8), (69. 7 + 13. 0); P < 0. 05] than those whose father had high school and college education. The children whose interaction time with their fathers per week were < 3 h got higher CBQ scores [(5.5 + 5.0) vs. (3. 8 + 4. 1), (2. 8 +3. 6); P < 0. 05] and lower IPPA scores [(63. 1 + 14. 6) vs. (70. 0 + 11. 7), (73. 8 + 11. 6); P < 0. 05] than those whose interaction time with their fathers per week were 3 - 7 h and > 7 h, and higher SDQ total difficulties scores than > 7 h group [(5. 5 + 5.0) vs. (3. 8 + 4. 1), (2. 8 + 3. 6); P < 0.05]. Father-child conflict could positively predict children's emotional problems ( = 0. 28, P < 0. 01) and conduct problems ( = 0. 18, P < 0. 01), father-child attachment could positively predict children' s prosocial behaviors ( = 0. 39, P < 0. 01) and negatively predict children's hyperactivity/inattention ( = -0. 28, P < 0. 01) and peer problem ( = -0. 14, P < 0. 05). Father-child attachment significantly moderated the relations between father-child conflict and children's emotional problems ( = 0. 17, P < 0. 01), conduct problems ( = 0. 12 P < 0. 05), hyperactivity/inattention (( = 0. 13, P < 0.05) and prosocial behavior ( = -0.21, P < 0.01). Conclusion: It suggests that children's emotional and behavioral problems are associated with father-child conflict and father-child attachment, and father-child attachment may moderate the relation of father-child conflict to children's emotional and behavioral problems.
