This article describes the development of social-emotional competence for school-starters. Both a teacher report checklist for social and learning behavior (Lehrereinschatzliste fur Sozial- und Lernverhalten, LSL; Petermann & Petermann, 2006) which focuses on resources and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-Deu 4-16; Goodman, 1997), an instrument to assess conduct problems, are used to assess emotional-social strengths and difficulties within transition from kindergarten to school. The aim of the study is to examine transferability of LSL the kindergarten area. A LSL kindergarten version is introduced. Its scale structure and psychometrical qualities are compared with the original LSL school version. Effectiveness of the LSL kindergarten version and connections between LSL and SDQ-Deu are illustrated. The LSL delivers complementary information on enrolment diagnostics and provides the basis for behavioral documentation of attendance at school and kindergarten.
